- Pulling to one side while driving;
- Feeling every bump in the road;
- Difficulty steering; or
- A lot of free movement in the steering wheel.
All of these could be signs of a faulty suspension or you could possibly need a wheel alignment. Either way you should get your car checked out by your mechanic to avoid further damage.
Problems with your suspension often means you will need the cars four shock absorbers and struts replaced. This depends on the model and age of your car, as well as the extent of the damage and whether any other components require replacing. A typical suspension replacement should cost between $400-$600 on most cars.
If your mechanic says that your cars suspension needs replacing, how do you really know for sure? Some signs to look out for:
- Your car pulls and/or squeaks when turning;
- You have visible uneven tread wear on your tyres. This is where one side is worn out more than the other;
- Your car nose dives when braking abruptly. This is most evident if the front struts or shocks are the suspected problem; and
- Visually look at your car to see if it sits level. That is walk around your car to see if one side of the car sits higher than the other. If none of these signs are visible, you may need a second opinion.
The most likely cause is your suspension. This is often due to a lack of lubrication between the parts causing metal-on-metal wear. If a lack of lubrication is the issue this is usually a quick and easy fix, and often an easy DIY project. If you can easily identify and reach your suspension coils, you can try spraying them with WD40. This is quick and cheap and will often resolve the problem, at least until your next service. If this doesn't work contact your mobile mechanic who should be able to resolve the issue on the spot.
The primary role of your cars suspension is to control the tyres connectivity with the road. Driving with faulty suspension could lead to a flat or burst tyre, a broken wheel, broken suspension parts. Any of these parts breaking while driving could negatively impact a cars handling, steering or braking, potentially causing an accident. If you have any concerns with your suspension you should book in with your mechanic straight away.
