The most common culprits of any truck electrical problem are likely to be the battery, starter motor or alternator. The most obvious symptoms of an electrical fault are:
- Your truck will not start. If your dashboard lights don’t work you likely need a new battery. If they do you probably need a new starter motor.
- Your truck lights dim. Another common symptom of battery or alternator problems is your headlights or dashboard lights dimming when you’re idling or driving at a low speed.
- Your brake lights don’t work. An obvious fix is to replace the brake light globes. If they still don’t work, the fuses need checking.
- The battery is corroded. Batteries should be checked regularly. If you notice corrosion it could be a sign that the battery is either leaking or nearing the end of its life. Either way it should be replaced as soon as possible.
If the battery or charge indicator light lights up on your dashboard this is likely a warning that the power level in your battery is not sufficient. If left unattended your trucks electricals will reduce or cease to operate. The likely culprit is either the battery or alternator. Your local mobile truck mechanic will be able to replace either onsite with little or no downtime disruption.
- Wet carpet on hot, humid days can indicate a clogged air conditioner drain.
- A vibration or abnormal noise when the fan is on could indicate debris in the blowerfan.
- A reduced amount of air coming out of the vents might mean the air conditioner’s evaporator is freezing up.
- A musty or mildew odour can indicate that mould is growing inside the evaporator box.
If you experience any of these symptoms it’s likely you need an air conditioning service. Time to book in with your local mobile truck mechanic [link to locations page].
When the battery becomes unreliable, you notice slow engine crank, your battery is leaking, bloated or corroded, or a maximum lifespan of 5 years.
